Gallivanting through Wisconsin

If you've been keeping up with the posts, then you know that Marty was sure to make use of the dock on the Mississippi River that is owned by the B&B where we stayed.  But I did't mention that while Marty was fishing, I was working on this.

It had caught my attention and I couldn't help but delve into it one morning. I ended up completing all of the faces and some other details, but it was all too obvious that there just weren't enough pieces to finish it.  So, I just closed it up and went to bed last night.

This morning, I mentioned the dilemma to the B&B hostess, and she asked me if I had checked the drawers.

Drawers?

Sure enough, along the side of the puzzle board, there are little sliding drawers, and when  I opened two of them, I spotted lots of puzzle pieces sorted in color schemes.  No wonder I couldn't complete it!

Who knew?  Well, I suppose now I do! Oh well...it will give the next guests something to do.

After breakfast, we packed up to begin our journey east.  As mentioned, a cancelled flight in Chicago on the trip out resulted in a car rental that must be returned to Chicago unless we want to pay an extra $2000.00.  That seemed an exorbitant price, so I had to make some last minute adjustments.

I'm one to plan ahead, so I was a bit uncomfortable heading out without a plan, but I had found a place that looked comfortable in Eagle, Wisconsin.  There is a heritage museum nearby that looked interesting, so I figured we could look into that tomorrow and spend the day driving out to Eagle.

Marty had done a quick search this morning, and found a Cheese Factory along the way where we could stop and take a break.

So, a little over 2 hours in, we were at the Cady Cheese Store

It had all kinds of delectable delights, including Wisconsin Ice Cream, so we both decided to treat ourselves to some.

It was certainly delectable!

We continued on our journey east, noting that traffic during the daylight hours is far difference than at night.  But it wasn't too bad, and around 5:00 pm we were rolling into Eagle, Wisconsin, headed to our B&B.

I had booked the Railroad Room at this place but hadn't noticed anything that connected the B&B to a railroad.  Well, it turns out that the proprietor is a railroad hobbyist, and when we walked to the guest entrance, there was a VERY large train display right there in the yard.

He gave Marty a demonstration, and Marty actually interviewed Gerry for a future YouTube movie on his Yinzerfishing channel. Never a dull moment, that's for sure.

The room itself is quite entertaining.  Lots of references to trains.

There was even a route map in the bathroom!

And even the towels have trains!

Gerry, our host, showed us the CD player tucked into a shelf in the wall, with CD's stacked next to us, just in case we wanted to relax in the roll top tub in the bathroom, while listening to calming tunes.  I found that to be quite amusing.  I should have asked for bubbles!

On Gerry's advice, we drove to the Fork in the Road Restaurant. It was an old stagecoach stop that is now a very busy diner.
The food was delicious.  I had ordered the macaroni and cheese as a side, and I must admit, they certainly have one special recipe!  It was delicious.

The restaurant has posters like those picture here, that feature celebrities who came from Wisconsin.

You can see Liberace behind me.  Orson Wells, Fred McMurray, Laura Ingles Wild, and the Watt brothers of football fame were just some of the names featured.  The place was super busy, and it's easy to see why.  The staff was very friendly and the food was made fresh and quite tasty.

So, with the bulk of the drive behind us, we are just relaxing in our quiet, peaceful railroad room here in Eagle.  After breakfast tomorrow, we'll be heading to Old World Wisconsin which looks quite fascinating for us history buffs. Then we'll drive to Geneva where, hopefully, the woman who answered the phone will have a room for us.  She didn't have a pen to take any info when I called, and she said that she would trust that we would show up.  Guess I'll trust that she'll have the room!

I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, Marty would like to show off some photos of fish that he caught early this morning in his last ditch effort prior to departure.

Mississippi fish:

Hope you found that exciting.  If not....you're excused.

Until next time...
